Okay, it has been five days since I installed Windows 7 on my Acer netbook.

How is it going?

Surprisingly well.  Performance remains better than with Windows XP.  The system is certainly more friendly than before. Sleep mode actually works (like it always has on a Mac) for the first time on Windows.  I really, really like the new task bar with the window preview.  Reminds me of OS X, maybe even one step better.

Windows 7On Friday afternoon, May 8, I bit the bullet and installed Windows 7 Release Candidate on my Acer Aspire One 150 netbook.  This machine has 1 GB RAM, a 160 GB hard drive, 8.9" screen, 1.6 GHz Atom N270 CPU.

Windows 7 installed smoothly (I went out after the install started, so I did not time it).  I initially had a little trouble getting it to recognize my wireless network, but soon was online.

SpinRite fixes my hard drive, again PDF Print

altThat's great, and kudos to SpinRite.  It took three days, and it sucessfully recovered everything.  But the build quality on this Acer Aspire 150 netbook is not good if I've had three crashes in Windows (where it woudn't start up) in as many months.  Ouch.

This is the third time in as many months.  I woke up this morning and when I went to pack my Acer Aspire 150 netbook to take to work, it was sitting at the CMOS setup screen.  Uh-oh, never a good sign.  So I figured it must have crashed and for some reason stopped here, which was weird. Not to dwell on it, I rebooted and was not pleasantly surprised when it came up to the setup screen again.  Reboot.  Same thing.  Then I noticed that the setup screen listed NO HARD DRIVE.

Ouch!

Another hard drive crash! PDF Print

It's been just a week and a a half since my Acer Netbook (running Windows) crashed bad due to bad sectors on the hard drive.  SpinRite recovered it nicely (I lost one data file, that's it).  So today I come into my office and my Linux desktop with the 500 GB of drive space had quit responding due to hard drive errors.  I started SpinRite and it says it will be an estimate 12 HOURS on the first (of two) drives.  So maybe sometime tomorrow I'll know the verdict.

I normally run hard drive maintenance once a quarter, but I'm late this time because we got a new hosting server, and I had some glitches in the migration.

I'm optimistic that SpinRite can work its magic once again.  I'll update later when I know what the outcome is.

FirefoxWe've been advising our clients to switch to the Firefox web browser and use the NoScript add-on for years. Yesterday's worm outbreak on Twitter just reinforces this again.

DNS servers attacked; Using OpenDNS PDF Print

Our network provider's DNS servers, which provide a "directory" service to find our hosted websites, were attacked by a DDOS (distributed denial-of-service) attack early this morning.  The servers were inaccessible due to the attack for several hours and came back online very early this morning.  We still are not sure of the time frame, but it appears it was around 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. give or take a few minutes.

All sites are 100% functional and did not go down, this was a DNS problem at our provider network, caused by an attack.

dimdimI've been looking for a free or low-cost solution to web conferencing for some time.  I ran across dimdim a while back and haven't had a chance to implement it (yet), but plan to in the near future.
